Curing solutions are added to meat and poultry cuts to impart specific color and flavoring, but they also serve to preserve the product for food safety and quality purposes. Marinating and basting solutions add unique flavors to the meat or poultry cut and also improve the texture of the cut.

As part of updated labeling rules aimed at helping consumers reduce excess sugar intake, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first required “Added Sugars” on the Nutrition Facts label in 2016, with full compliance required by 2021 for most manufacturers.
